Concrete Footings vs. a No-Concrete Foundation

Every carport, gazebo, or pergola needs something to anchor it to the ground. Traditionally that means poured concrete footings — but a driven steel-pile foundation can do the same job with no digging, no pour, and no curing. Here is how the two compare on cost, time, soil, and permanence so you can pick the right one for your site.

The two approaches

Concrete footingsare the traditional method: you excavate holes, set forms and rebar, pour concrete, and wait for it to cure before building. It is proven and strong in compression, and it is what most people picture when they think “foundation.”

A no-concrete, driven-pile foundation skips the pour entirely. Steel piles are driven into the ground to carry the load through a combination of skin friction along the pile and end bearing at the tip, and the structure bolts straight to the anchor. Cost

Concrete carries costs that are easy to underestimate: the concrete itself, forms and rebar, excavation, and hauling away the spoil — plus the labor and often the equipment to do it. A driven-pile foundation removes most of that. There is no material to pour, no excavation, and no spoil to dispose of, which is why a pile system is frequently cost- and labor-competitive for a shade structure. Time — the cure is the bottleneck

This is the biggest practical difference. Concrete needs time to cure before it can carry load: it develops much of its strength over the first several days and reaches full design strength weeks later. That waiting period sits in the middle of your build, and cold or wet weather slows it further. A driven-pile foundation has nothing to cure — the anchors carry load as soon as they are set, so you can build on top immediately. Soil and site conditions

Both approaches have to respect the ground they sit on, and both should be engineered for it. In cold climates, concrete footings generally have to extend below the frost line to avoid heaving, which means deeper excavation. Driven piles develop their capacity from friction and end bearing along their depth; for the EZ Foundation, four piles drive down and outward at opposing angles for a combined ground penetration of roughly 16 feet, split to whatever depth combination your soil passes. Very rocky ground or unusual soils can favor one method over the other, which is why site-specific engineering matters for either choice.

One safety note that applies to both: always call 811 to locate buried utilities before you dig or drive anything.

Permanence and strength

Both are permanent foundations, not temporary anchors. Concrete is the familiar benchmark for a solid, immovable footing. A properly engineered driven-pile foundation is equally permanent and, because opposing piles lock the cap against uplift, shear, and moment, it resists the exact forces a carport sees in high wind — not just downward load.
