An RV or a boat is often the second- or third-most-valuable thing a household owns, and it spends most of its life parked. Left uncovered, the sun and weather do quiet, expensive damage the whole time it sits — which is why a permanent cover is one of the cheapest forms of insurance you can put over a rig. The trick is building one tall enough to clear the vehicle, and strong enough that being tall doesn't make it a liability in a storm.
Why cover an RV or boat at all
Ultraviolet light is relentless on the materials these vehicles are made of. On an RV, sustained sun fades and chalks the exterior, dries out roof and window seals until they leak, cracks dashboards and trim, and ages tires from the sidewall in. On a boat, UV oxidizes gelcoat until it goes dull and chalky, breaks down vinyl seating and canvas, and bakes the interior. Add rain, snow load, tree sap, and bird droppings, and an uncovered rig depreciates and deteriorates on two fronts at once. A solid overhead cover blocks the sun and sheds the weather before any of that starts, and it does so for decades rather than the season or two a fabric cover lasts. Measured against the value of what's parked under it, a permanent steel cover pays for itself in preserved condition and deferred repairs.
Measure for height and length before anything else
Clearance is where RV and boat covers are won or lost, and it's the one number you have to get from your own rig rather than a chart. Motorhomes vary enormously — a tall Class A with rooftop air conditioners sits far higher than a low travel trailer — and a boat on a trailer is taller than the boat alone once you add the trailer height, and taller still if a T-top, tower, or a stepped mast is in the picture. As a rule of thumb, measure the tallest point of the fully loaded, trailered rig and add working clearance on top for vents, antennas, and the simple act of driving in and out without holding your breath. Length and width follow the same logic: leave room to open bay doors, walk the perimeter, and pull in without threading a needle.

Tall covers need real wind engineering
Height is the whole reason these covers exist and also their biggest structural challenge. A tall RV cover presents a large surface high off the ground, which means more leverage for the wind and more uplift on the roof — a light-duty carport sized for a sedan is simply not the same structure. This is where an engineered steel frame earns its place. A metal roof is the right cover for the job
Fabric and portable covers flap, chafe, trap moisture against the surface, and shred under UV within a couple of seasons — the same weather you're trying to escape. A solid metal roofon a steel frame does the opposite: it takes the sun and rain itself, sheds water and snow cleanly, and doesn't degrade sitting out in the elements. Open cover, partial walls, or fully enclosed
Not every rig needs four walls. An open-sided cover is the simplest and best-ventilated option — it blocks the sun and the rain from above while air moves freely underneath, which discourages the trapped humidity that breeds mildew on upholstery and canvas. Adding partial end walls or a back wall gives more protection from driving rain and low sun on an exposed site without fully enclosing the structure. The right amount of enclosure depends on your climate and how the rig is stored; the frame supports the range, and we can spec it to match how exposed your parking spot really is.
