A carport is an open structure, and that changes the physics. Wind doesn't just push on it from the side; it flows under the roof plane and pushes up. Uplift tries to peel the roof away, lateral pressure tries to rack the frame out of square, and every gust cycle works on the connections. An open-sided structure that isn't engineered for these forces as a complete system — members, connections, and anchorage together — is the kind that ends up in a neighbor's yard.

For scale, the National Weather Service notes that isolated wind damage is possible when winds are sustained at just 40 to 50 mph, and that thunderstorm straight-line winds can exceed 100 mph. Just as important is what the rating is not. It is not a promise that any structure survives any storm regardless of circumstances. Real-world performance depends on assembling the kit exactly per the drawings, anchoring it as specified, and on your site's exposure. It is also not a substitute for your local requirement. Where conditions demand it, site- and state-specific engineering is available — and coastal jurisdictions are precisely where that option earns its keep.

Who decides what you need

In the US, structural wind design generally traces to ASCE/SEI 7, the load standard that model building codes reference; ASCE notes that many of its standards are adopted by state and local jurisdictions. But the design wind speed for your address is assigned by your local building department — the authority having jurisdiction. Anchoring is half the battle

A frame rated for extreme wind is only as strong as its connection to the ground. The stamped drawings specify the anchorage for a reason, and high-wind country is not the place to improvise on it.
