What Is S350 Structural Steel?

What the S350 designation on structural steel actually means, why yield strength matters, and how it compares to light-gauge tubing.

Steel spec sheets are full of letter-and-number codes that mean everything to an engineer and nothing to most buyers. We describe our frames as commercial-grade S350 structural steel, and people regularly ask what that actually means. Fair question — let's decode it.

Reading a steel grade

In structural steel grade naming, the S identifies the material as structural steel, and the number states its minimum yield strength in megapascals. S350 steel must resist at least 350 megapascals of stress — roughly 50,000 pounds per square inch — before it begins to permanently deform. That single number tells an engineer more about a frame member than any amount of marketing copy.

Yield strength, in plain English

Push on a steel member and it flexes; release it and it springs back. That's elastic behavior, and it's the zone a structure is meant to live in. Push past the yield point and the steel stays bent — permanently. For a building frame, permanent deformation is failure: a post that has yielded is compromised even if it hasn't snapped.

Tensile strength — the point where steel actually tears apart — is a higher number, but it's not the one that governs design. A frame that gets anywhere near tensile failure stopped being a safe structure long before. Engineers design so that working loads sit comfortably below yield, with margin to spare, which is why the yield grade is the number worth asking about.

Grade versus gauge

Most comparison shopping fixates on gauge — the thickness of the tube wall. Thickness matters, but two tubes of identical size and gauge can behave very differently if one is made from a higher-strength grade. Budget structures sold at big-box price points are commonly built from light-gauge tubing, and that is exactly the product category we position commercial-grade S350 against. Higher yield strength means each member brings more capacity to the system, and capacity is what engineering turns into ratings you can take to a permit office.

From grade to ratings

A steel grade alone doesn't make a structure strong — the system does. Strength is not rust resistance

One thing a grade designation tells you nothing about: corrosion. Strength and durability are separate properties, and the second one belongs to the coating. Our S350 members carry a ZAM zinc-aluminum-magnesium coating, designed to outlast ordinary galvanizing by holding its corrosion protection even at cut edges and in coastal, high-humidity climates. If a seller talks grade but goes quiet on coating — or the reverse — you're only hearing half the durability story.

Using this when you shop

Whoever you buy from, a short list of questions will separate engineered products from paint-and-hope:

  • What steel grade is the frame? Ask for the designation, not adjectives like "heavy duty" or "high quality."
  • What is the coating, specifically?
  • What wind and snow ratings is the structure engineered to, and are they documented in stamped drawings?
  • Is the frame kit complete — every component cut, drilled, and included — or a partial bundle? And is roofing included or separate? (Ours is separate on carports and gazebos; the pergola's slat roof is included.)
